According to statistics recorded on the GOV. UK website the [heatwaves of 2022](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/heat-mortality-monitoring-reports/heat-mortality-monitoring-report-2022) caused nearly 3,000 heat-related deaths, many of which could have been prevented with the right preparation and treatment. Many families will also be escaping to southern Europe for holidays, where record-breaking temperatures have been the norm for the last few years. Heatstroke is a clear and present danger in hot weather, so what should pharmacists say about the dangers of heatstroke to help to [minimise the risk to their customers this summer](https://www.suresign.com/ciga-healthcare-blog/importance-of-blood-pressure-monitoring)? ## **What Causes Heatstroke?** Heatstroke occurs when the body’s core temperature rises above 40°C for an extended period. At this point, the body is unable to regulate its temperature. Heatstroke can lead to serious side effects, including confusion, seizures, organ failure, and even death. The condition is more likely in hot weather for several reasons, so it is worth informing your customers of the risks they face in summer: - Higher ambient temperatures increase the risk of overheating. - High humidity can impair the body’s ability to cool itself through sweating. - Direct exposure of the sun can cause the body temperature to rise rapidly. - Dehydration is more likely due to sweating and fluid loss, impacting the body’s temperature regulation. - Individuals who are not accustomed to heat may be more prone to developing heatstroke. ## **What Are The Symptoms Of Heatstroke?** It is important that your customers recognise the symptoms of heatstroke so that, should they or a family member be affected, they can obtain prompt medical care, which is vital to prevent serious side effects from setting in. ## **The Symptoms Include:** - A very high temperature - Hot red skin - A rapid heart rate - Hypotension (low blood pressure) - Confusion and lack of coordination - Seizures/fits - Loss of consciousness - Shock [Changes in blood pressure ](https://www.suresign.com/ciga-healthcare-blog/importance-of-at-home-blood-pressure-monitors)can be an important sign of heatstroke: initially, blood pressure may rise as the body attempts to dissipate the excess heat but, as the condition progresses and the body’s heat regulation mechanisms become overwhelmed, blood pressure can drop significantly.
